The Far Woods Bird Pattern

Right when I saw this pattern by The Far Woods I knew I wanted to make a patchwork bird with my daughter. It was the perfect holiday break project! Once we decided on our palettes I brought in a bunch of naturally dyed fabric remnants from my studio and we took over the kitchen table beside the wood stove. It only took us two evenings to finish our birds because we got really into working on them. Ila made the blue bird and I made the green one. The solid fabrics are naturally dyed and the prints are vintage fabrics from my stash.

Ila gave her bird patchwork wings and a crocheted shawl which I think are the cutest! She came up with the beret idea too which I totally copied.

Of course each bird needed a patchwork quilt! These are simple little nine-patch quilts made from my scrap basket. I have a free nine-patch tutorial here if you want to make one.

I felt like these deserved a special gift bag so I sewed up a couple railroad stripe bags. The fabric is vintage denim from my stash and the lining fabrics are also random fabrics that I’ve had around forever.

These were so fun to make and I’m sure we’ll make more in the future. I can’t wait to give them to my niece and nephew.
