THE FORAGER QUILT
The background color of The Forager Quilt came from oak leaves that my sons foraged for me on our farm. The variations in that color are really interesting in that they give the quilt a certain suede look. The star is indigo dyed.
The fabrics used in this quilt are cotton/linen blend, and the back side is made of indigo dyed organic linen and a piece of vintage fabric from my collection. This piece is entirely hand quilted with black cotton sashiko thread. The batting is unbleached cotton.
All proceeds from the sale of this piece will be donated to Refugee Makers Project, a project that my friend Bryan Norris of Forager & Co is developing. The goal of the project is to help refugee craftsman utilize their individual skills and also learn English related to their trade.
In Bryan's words:
"Too often skilled refugees end up settling for low level jobs out of desperation to support themselves. ESL classes are available; however, they focus on general language skills and not, for example, what a Swahili-speaking tailor might need in order to become successful in the US. Our goal is to provide unique work experience for refugee craftsman—an opportunity to create marketable goods, while cultivating trade specific language skills in order to integrate into American communities."
