Safflower Petals

$48.00
Sold Out

Growing these flower petals was a real labor of love! The plants were started by seed in early summer and I began harvesting them in mid-August by clipping the flower heads individually. Safflower is a variety of thistle so the flower heads are really pokey but also very gorgeous and funky. After harvesting I set the flower heads out on screens to dry. Once they were dry I plucked the petals from each flower head, getting a tiny pinch at a time.

Each package contains 40 grams of petals from hundreds and hundreds of flower heads. As a disclosure, you can source these as an import for far less than I can offer them.

Safflower petals yield either a clear bright yellow, or a clear bright pink. Both colors are super fun and are a joyful addition to a quilt palette.

There’s a very specific method for dyeing with safflower petals. If you purchase them and need dye instructions, please send me an email and I’ll be happy to send you a recipe.

Grown, harvested, and cured by Sara here in southwestern Colorado on Ancient Future Farm. Our family has been tending this land and soil with regenerative growing methods since 2005. Our soil is nurtured through extensive cover cropping and our crops are fertilized with compost that we make right here on site. We never use synthetic chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or fungicides. Our dye flowers are harvested every day by hand when they reach their optimal potential and then carefully cured in our curing room out of direct sunlight. All of our natural dyestuffs are packaged in heat sealed envelopes to keep them fresh. For best results we recommend using them within a year.
