A very rich source of clear colored tannin which is used to mordant cellulose fibers before mordanting with alum and soda ash. These galls were foraged locally by my friend Jenny on her farm. They’re almost too beautiful to use! I recommend grinding them in a blender or crushing them with a mortar and pestle. I was going to grind them for you but they’re too pretty.
