GLASS STARS QUILT
The Glass Stars Quilt is entirely plant and mineral dyed on the front side. The dark gray background color came from tannin and iron. The pinks and reds were produced with madder root, the mustard colors came from oak leaves, and the purples from logwood. The pink and red color placements make your eyes dance around the quilt and also gives this piece a glowing effect reminiscent to light shining through stained glass.
The traditional name for this block is Union Squares. It was originally named in 1933 by a Chicago Tribune columnist Nancy Cabot. She suggested for this block to be sewn in two colors to represent unity, and also women's suffrage. I recently read an account of a group of women protesting for the right to vote who marched through the streets of London with a Union Squares quilt sewn in red and and white.
The back of this quilt is constructed of vintage wool (the light and dark grays and the red strip at the top), vintage calicos, and madder root dyed pinks.
Pieced by machine, entirely quilted by hand with black cotton Japanese Sashiko thread, and hand stitched binding. Fabrics used in this piece: organic cotton, a cotton/linen blend, vintage wool, vintage cotton calicos, and linen. Natural unbleached cotton batting.
Measures approximately: 83 inches x 66 inches. Fits a twin sized bed with overhang or a full/double with limited overhang. Also can be used as a lap quilt, or a work of art to be hung on the wall.
