Marion’s Choice Quilt block Tutorial

Folk Sampler Sew Along Block 17

Marion’s Choice is featured in our exquisite sampler quilt example which you can view here. The block is composed of 12 Half Square Triangles and 4 Quarter Square Triangles. Very easy, very fun!

The finished size of this block is 12” (the unfinished size is 12 1/2”) because that’s what we’re working with in the Folk Sampler Sew Along. As with all quilt blocks you can change the size of the block by changing the size of the HST pieces within which is explained in this post. To change the size of the QST’s refer to this tutorial. Throughout the following instructions I will refer to the colors as the ones I chose for my block shown on the left in the photo above: white, light indigo blue, and olive green. As you plan your block, swap my colors for your personal choices.

For the natural dyers you can find my recipe for olive green here, and my recipe for light blue here.

Finished Block Size 12”

1/4” seam allowance

Cut List

For the QST’s:

Cut 2 white squares: 4.5”

Cut 2 blue squares: 4.5”

For the HST’s:

Cut 6 white squares: 4”

Cut 6 olive squares: 4”

Make the QST’s

Gather the four (4.5”) squares you cut for the QST’s. Place the 2 blue squares on your work surface, then place a white square on top of each blue square. Head over to my Quarter Square Triangle Tutorial to make a total of 4 QST’s beginning at step 2. When you get to the TRIM section of the tutorial, trim the QST’s to 3.5”.

Make the HST’s

Gather all of the 4” squares you cut for the HST’s. Place the 6 olive squares on your work surface, then place a white square on top of each olive square. Head over to my Half Square Triangle tutorial to make a total of 12 HST’s. Begin the tutorial where is says ASSEMBLE HST’s. When you get to the TRIM part of the tutorial trim all 12 HST’s to 3.5”.

Now we have all the pieces we need to make a Marion’s Choice block. Arrange the pieces on your work surface as shown below.

Sew the pieces together to form 4 horizontal rows as shown below. Press the seams open or to the side if you prefer.

Sew the rows together one at a time being careful to match the seams by pinning. Press the seams open or to the side if you prefer.

And there we have a Marion’s Choice block!

Only 3 more blocks to go! If you have any questions please ask them in the comment section below for all to reference. Please continue to share your beautiful work on IG using the tag #folksamplersewalong. What a gorgeous gallery we’re creating over there. Thank you for sharing!
